Mekotek, also known as Grebek Mekotek, takes place in Munggu Village, Mengwi (Badung Regency), and is held every six months and after Kuningan Day (29 Nov 2025), a sacred Balinese Hindu celebration. The word “Mekotek” comes from the sound “tek-tek,” echoing when hundreds of men clash long wooden poles (around 3–4 meters) together, forming tall towers of sticks as a symbol of unity and strength.
Originally performed as a war ritual to bless the soldiers of Mengwi Kingdom before battle, today Mekotek represents victory of good over evil, harmony within the community, and gratitude for peace and prosperity. The event is filled with excitement, music, and traditional dress, an incredible sight for travelers who want to witness Bali’s authentic heritage beyond the beaches.
